Port of Krueng Raya

Port of Krueng Raya also known as Malahayati Port located 20 km outside the city of Banda Aceh. Krueng Raya villagers have for generations protected the honour of the land of Malahayati. In 1599, Admiral Malahayati led 2,000 inong balee (widows of war heroes) in a battle against the Portuguese. This fighting spirit lives on to this day.

Krueng Raya has for centuries enjoyed renown as a busy fishing port. People from various important places in the world such as Kota Raja in Banda Aceh and Gujarat in India called on the port. The people take pride in their history and feel responsible for maintaining the reputation of Krueng Raya as a fishing port.

Krueng Raya is known as Aceh’s “capital” of teri nasi (tiny sea fish). In the bay, the delicious tiny fish are caught, boiled, sun-dried and then loaded onto trucks to be delivered to Banda Aceh, Medan and even Jakarta.
